The Altoona girls’ basketball team didn’t get their offense into high gear until the fourth quarter of their game on Thursday, December 20. Instead, they just made sure Gilman never got going in the first place. The Railroader defense gave up the fewest points it had allowed in nearly five years as Altoona defeated the Pirates 50-21. The Altoona Railroaders evened their season mark at four wins and four losses with a convincing 9-2 victory over the Medford Raiders on Thursday, December 20. The Rails played a solid game in both the defensive and offensive zones. Altoona out-shot Medford by over a 2:1 ratio as Altoona fired 48 shots on net to 21 for Medford. The Rails controlled play throughout the entire game. In the first period, Alex VanKampen scored two goals and Cory Bostrom tallied the other. It was immediately apparent from the time public address announcer Bob Burgraff introduced the starting lineups that Friday night’s matchup between Altoona and Gilman would be very different than last year’s memorable, down-to-the-wire contests.
