On Tuesday, February 26, students from Pedersen Elementary School, Altoona Middle school, St. Mary’s Elementary School, and Otter Creek Christian Academy were recognized for their efforts to create fire prevention posters. The annual contest, which is sponsored by the Altoona Firefighters Association, is an effort to spread awareness about fire prevention. Students were given just over a month to complete their posters, which were turned in to the Altoona Fire Department for judging. Select winners will move on to the state competition.

On Halloween night 1951, flames consumed Altoona’s public school building and with it an enormous amount of history. I entered kindergarten in this building in 1930, and emerged as a high school graduate in 1942. Throughout these 13 years, I spent a varying amount of my life in specific rooms of the school building: three years in the K-2 room, which was in the southwest corner of the first floor immediately above the gym, and one year in Beulah Turney’s eighth-grade room, which was in the northwest corner of the second floor.

The Altoona girls’ basketball team scored the game’s first 21 points, holding the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference’s second-place team scoreless for over a quarter, as the Railroaders cruised past Thorp 65-31 in the second-place game at the Cloverbelt Conference crossover event in Osseo on Saturday, February 23.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team finished their 2007-2008 season on a strong note, putting together a five-game winning streak before losing out to sectional finalist Lakeland in the second round of the playoffs. The resulting 11-11 record marked the sixth consecutive season the Railroaders finished at .500 or better after only three such seasons in the first 21 years of the program.
