On Wednesday, July 16, Governor Jim Doyle announced that 38 Wisconsin communities will be reimbursed for projects to begin making their streets and intersections safer for children who walk or bike to school. Part of the federally funded Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program’s grant money, which is in its second year of funding, will enable SRTS to achieve its goal of getting more children in grades K-8 walking or biking – and therefore, maintaining healthy lifestyles – instead of riding in buses or cars.
