Tennis plays to 7-0 victory
September 20th, 2008 by Derek HagenThe Altoona girls’ tennis team swept every set at Barron en route to a 7-0 victory over the Golden Bears on Tuesday, September 16.
Altoona’s #1 doubles team of Lindsey Sletner and Alana Peck and their #3 doubles team of Kalia Xiong and Morgan Potapenko won by 6-0, 6-0 margins, as did #3 singles player Stefanie Gessert. Hillary Jenness, Ashley Schick, and Lisa Peck also recorded singles victories for the Railroaders, as did the #2 doubles team of Samantha Preston and Chelsie Valk.
“The girls played well, but there’s still room for improvement,” said Altoona coach Greg Emerson. “The next two weeks are going to be the telltale of the season. It pretty much sets up the seeds for sub-sectionals.”
That stretch began with a trip to Bloomer on Thursday, September 18, but that was played after press time and will be featured in next week’s edition of the Star. Altoona returned to action with a quad meet at New Richmond with River Falls and Rice Lake on Saturday, September 20, which was rescheduled after it was rained out the previous weekend.
The Railroaders follow that with home meetings with Onalaska Luther on Monday, September 22 and Eau Claire Regis on Tuesday, September 23 before co-hosting the Chippewa Valley Tennis Conference meet with Eau Claire Regis on Saturday, September 27. Altoona’s meet with Black River Falls that was rained out on Tuesday, September 2 has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 30.
