At the Altoona City Council meeting on Thursday, January 8, City Administrator Mike Golat updated members on a list of projects he submitted for consideration in Governor Jim Doyle’s request for a $3.7 billion federal stimulus package for the state of Wisconsin. Although it is unknown how much money the state will receive and how much will trickle down to individual municipalities, Golat felt the list submission was a proactive move.

Tough economic times often necessitate taking tough economic measures, and the Altoona Youth Hockey Association is doing just that. In an effort to raise more money and follow through on previously agreed-upon upgrades to Altoona Hobbs Sports Center, which the AYHA rents from the city for $1 every year, the AYHA asked Altoona City Council members to consider a revised capital improvement plan that pushes back major improvements like coil replacement and new concrete installation to 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Altoona residents can expect to play an active role in the future of River Prairie, thanks to a suggestion by Mayor Tom Meyer to hold a public meeting on the development in early 2009. Meyer made the suggestion at the city council meeting on Thursday, November 20, where council members unanimously approved the 2009 budget.

The October 9 city council meeting began with a continued discussion of a compensation and classification study for the city of Altoona’s non-represented permanent employees.
This time, the council members were able to get answers directly from Carlson Dettman Consulting (CDC), the firm that has been contracted to conduct the study.

A good portion of the Altoona City Council meeting on Thursday, September 25 was spent discussing a compensation and classification study for the city of Altoona’s non-represented permanent employees.
These employees include city clerk Cindy Bauer, city administrator/public works director Mike Golat, finance director Jon Pfeilsticker, human resources coordinator Sheila Lehnen, city engineer David Walter, police and fire chief Todd Chaney, parks & rec department coordinator Debra Goldbach, building inspector Eric Velin, and various library personnel.

At the June 26 Altoona City Council meeting, members approved a forgivable loan in the amount of $64,000 to Curt Manufacturing. Much of the meeting on Thursday, September 11 focused on an additional $100,000 revolving loan fund (RLF) application put forth by Curt Manufacturing.

In July 2008, Citizen Action of Wisconsin turned in 600 signatures from Altoona residents to city hall in support of their proposed healthcare referendum.
During the Altoona City Council meeting on Thursday, August 28, Eau Claire resident and Citizen Action of Wisconsin Northwest Organizer Andrew Werthmann spoke to council members about healthcare reform.

Following a proposal by River Prairie developer CottageRidge Group to relocate a storm water retention pond for the northeast and southeast quadrants, it was determined by the Altoona City Council at their meeting on Thursday, August 14 that City Administrator Mike Golat will continue negotiations with the developer in an effort to secure the best possible return on the city’s River Prairie investments.
