Evaluate body composition
It is valuable to have a baseline evaluation of your body composition prior to starting any weight loss program. Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) is a widely accepted method of measuring the ratio of body fat against lean muscle mass and also gives valuable information on cellular health, metabolism, and toxicity.
Impedance is measured non-invasively by sending a very small undetectable electrical current through body cells; impedance is low in lean tissue, but high in fat tissue. Using BIA technology during weight loss allows you to track:
Total body Water: Your muscle contains more water than fat, lean muscle tissue is approximately 73% water fat tissue is approximately 10% water. The higher your total body water the more lean muscle you have, which helps burn fat and protect bone density, but weighs more on the scale.
Cellular Health (“phase angle”): Independent of your height, weight and body fat, lower phase angle appears to be consistent with either cell death or a breakdown of the cell membrane. Higher phase angles appear to be consistent with large quantities of intact cell membranes. The higher your number, the healthier your cells are.
Basal Metabolic Rate: BMR is the amount of energy your body requires every day to perform basic life functions. Any exercise you do over and above your BMR burns calories, the BIA calculates your BMR and suggests activities to help you achieve your fat loss goals.
Water inside/outside of cells: Toxins in your body cause damage and make it more difficult for your cells to stay functioning. The ideal is to have more water inside your cells than outside. Loss of this balance caused by toxin buildup can prevent your cells from functioning properly, leading to slow and difficult weight loss.
Maintaining your lean mass, clearing stored toxins, and improving cellular health leads to better body balance for health improvement and prevention of illness. By creating a baseline you are able to adjust your nutrition and exercise program to achieve weight loss in a healthy and effective way.
