Get to Know Your Neighbor: Laurel Robertson

As owner of Dinner’s On, this week’s neighbor is a personal chef, caterer, and as of July, a cooking instructor at Silver Spring Gardens.

She attended Eau Claire North High School, graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1990 with a degree in journalism and advertising, began working in human resources, and opened her own business over two years ago. Since then, she has catered events for the Altoona VFW Auxiliary and other local groups.

This self-taught chef has been married for 12 years and is now a mother of two.

She stays active in the community as a Chamber member in Eau Claire, a leader and state ambassador for Weight Watchers, and a contributing writer for “Queen of the Castle” magazine.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Bob Thompson

This week’s neighbor was born in 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and later moved to Altoona during his childhood.

He attended Altoona Public School during 1951 when the building burned down, and is one of 30 students to graduate from the city auditorium in 1952.

He went on to pursue a career in printing, but is now retired after spending 40 years in the business.

This resident is a past president of the Altoona Alumni Organization and a frequent volunteer at Altoona Middle School, where his wife works as a librarian.

He is a husband, father of two, and a grandfather of three.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Bernie Behounek

Born in 1946 in Chelsea, Iowa, this neighbor has been living in Altoona for 30 years.

He graduated from Tama High, where he participated in Future Farmers of America.

He lives in Altoona with his wife of 37 years. They have four children, Jason, 34, April, 31, Emily, 17, and Jordan, 13. He also has four grandchildren.

He has been self-employed for 30 years, working in franchise and sales with NATCO Tools.

He volunteered for the Altoona Fire Department for seven years. He served on the city council for three years, and served as Mayor for six years.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Debbie Struck

This week’s neighbor was born in Eau Claire in 1951. She has lived in Altoona for the past 53 years.

She graduated from Altoona High School where she had been involved with cheerleading. She was briefly involved with track when it first started, but there were no other sports for girls that she could participate in.

She has worked for the Altoona High School for the past 32 years as a secretary.

She is married with two children, Mark and Matt, and she also has two grandchildren.

This neighbor has been involved with school activities. She also enjoys quilting, walking, woodworking and crafts.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Bill Wagner

This week’s neighbor was born in 1954 in Fairbanks, Alaska, where his father was stationed at the time. In 1960 he moved to Altoona and has lived here ever since.

He graduated in 1972 from Altoona High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball.

After high school, he served with the Altoona Fire Department for a short while. He also coached the Altoona freshman girls’ basketball team for 13 years.

At the age of 19, he got a job working for the Altoona Public Works Department, where he still currently works. He has been employed by the city for 33 years now.

He and his wife Sandie have two children: Molly, age 29, and Cole, age 25.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Ralph Flanners

This week’s neighbor was born in Canby, Minn., in 1935. He graduated from Canby High School, where he played football.

He moved to Altoona 37 years ago. He lives here now with his wife of 47 years. Together, they have three sons and one daughter, ages 45, 43, 41 and 39.

He is also a grandfather to 10 grandchildren. He spends a lot of time with his grandchildren, and often takes them to their sporting events. He is a fan of NASCAR and NFL football.

He is retired now, but works as a part-time bartender for Rolly’s Coach Club in Altoona. Every week he can be found bowling at Bowl-winkles and he is also a member of the Lions Club.

Neighbor of the Week: John Marcon

This week’s neighbor was born in Eau Claire in 1943. He moved to Altoona in 1965 and has lived here for 42 years.

He graduated from Regis High School in 1961. Afterwards, he ran his father-in-law’s business, Roy’s Supermarket, which was located across from K-Mart at the time. From there, he went into the tax assessing business.

He is married and has three children, a daughter aged 36 and two sons, 33 and 30.

He served on the Altoona City Council from 1976-1979.

A hobby he may be known by is his interest in model trains. Later this year, an article featuring himself and his trains will appear in the national magazine, Classic Toy Trains.

Neighbor of the Week: Jeff “Stretch” Hardy

Jeff “Stretch” Hardy

This week’s neighbor was born in Menomonie in 1956. He has lived in Altoona for the past 15 years.

He graduated from Chippewa Valley Technical College in 1976 with a degree in carpentry. He has spent the last 20 years working for the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at the Haas Fine Arts building and with Housing and Residence Life.

He has three children, Dustin (21), Dalton (16), and Dillon (13). The younger two attend school in Altoona.

This neighbor also has a nickname that was given to him in college by some of his friends. This name has stuck with him over the years. Some residents of Altoona may recognize him better by it.

Get to Know Your Neighbor: Larry Sturz

This neighbor was born in 1941 in Eau Claire. He has lived in Altoona for 47 years.

 

He graduated from Altoona High School in 1959 and played basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1960 for a year and rejoined the team at age 27 in 1968.

 

He works part time at Scheels. He has three children and six grandchildren. He was the Mayor of Altoona for four terms.

Becky Washburn

This week’s neighbor received her high school education in California in the 1970s. She moved to Eau Claire in 1990. She has resided in Altoona for the past 14 years.

She was the kitchen manager at Secret Garden in Altoona for five years. She is currently the Production lead at Senasys and has worked there for six years.

She is an avid Harley Davidson rider with her husband Mike.

She has two daughters, Stephanie and Amber, a son-in-law Pat, and two grandsons, Josh and John. Stephanie is a 2006 graduate of Altoona High School.
