The Altoona girls’ basketball team held River Falls scoreless for a stretch of over eight minutes in the first half as they went on an 18-0 run to take control in a 60-37 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday, January 10 in Altoona.

Riding a six-game winning streak since their 1-3 start, it appeared the Altoona girls’ basketball team was back on track. The one thing they had not done in that span was face a team with a winning record. They faced that test on Tuesday, January 13, and passed, extending their winning streak to seven games with a 50-46 win over rival Eau Claire Regis in a game that could prove crucial in the Western Cloverbelt Conference standings.

The Altoona boys’ basketball team rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to pull within three in the final minute, but could not get any closer as they fell 55-49 to conference rival Eau Claire Regis in Altoona on Friday, January 9.

The Osseo-Fairchild/Altoona/Augusta co-op wrestling team had a busy start to 2009 with seven dual matches in a five-day span, defeating Abbotsford/Colby 40-34 in Osseo on Thursday, January 8, going 2-3 at their home tournament on Saturday, January 10, and then losing by tiebreaker to Whitehall on Tuesday, January 13.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team improved their record to 3-6-1 with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Barron/Chetek Bears on Thursday, January 8. The Railroaders were in control of the game from start to finish as they dominated the Bears offensively and defensively, out-shooting the Bears 40-13 and getting goals from seven different players.

The Altoona boys’ basketball team used two first-half runs to build a big lead, then did just enough down the stretch to hang on in the face of a late Osseo-Fairchild rally, defeating the Chieftains 59-54 in Osseo on Tuesday, January 6.

Altoona’s Justin Poirier took fourth place at 152 pounds and his brother, Jeremy Poirier, placed fifth at 160 pounds to help the Osseo-Fairchild/Altoona/Augusta co-op wrestling team to a sixth-place among Division 1 teams at Northern Badger Wrestling Meet in River Falls on Monday and Tuesday, December 29 and 30.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team kept a pair of former Northwest Central Hockey League rivals from scoring for most of two games, but had to settle for an 0-1-1 record on the week, with a 1-1 tie at La Crescent on Saturday, January 3, and a 4-2 loss to Sparta on Tuesday, January 6.

With the book on 2008 officially closed and 2009 just beginning, we thought we would take a look back at the sports year that was here in Altoona. It was a busy and exciting year, to be sure, with multiple high school teams advancing to state, new records being set, and all sorts of events and activities going on throughout the community.
