The Altoona boys’ basketball team used two first-half runs to build a big lead, then did just enough down the stretch to hang on in the face of a late Osseo-Fairchild rally, defeating the Chieftains 59-54 in Osseo on Tuesday, January 6.

A tip-in and three free throws, followed by a drawn charge with one-tenth of a second left, capped off a second-half comeback as the Altoona boys’ basketball team won a 65-62 barnburner before a large, raucous crowd at Chippewa Falls McDonell on Friday, December 19.

The Altoona boys’ basketball team defeated Chippewa Falls McDonell 65-62 in a wild one in Chippewa Falls on Friday, December 19. With both teams missing key players, the Railroaders got a tip-in with 25 seconds left to tie the game, and hit three of four free throws in the final 14 seconds to win. It was a familiar script. Just as they had done so many times last season, the Altoona boys’ basketball team was letting a lead slip away in the fourth quarter. What had been an 11-point lead for the Railroaders had dwindled to a single point in a span of about five minutes, and Baldwin-Woodville was on the verge of stealing a win.

It took a quarter for them to get rolling, but the Altoona boys’ basketball team opened their season on a high note on Tuesday, December 2, welcoming Stanley-Boyd back to the Western Cloverbelt Conference with a 64-43 win over the Orioles.

The Altoona boys’ basketball team will look to rebound this season, returning a large part of last year’s 5-16 squad that was competitive in most of its games but frequently came up just short down the stretch.
“I think one of our main goals this year is just to improve every game,” said coach Andy Riechers. “We know how tough the quality of competition is going to be. One thing we want to learn from last year is how to finish off games better. We had the lead or were tied several times going into the fourth quarter and we weren’t able to sustain it. That’s something we’re really hoping that we gained in experience and can learn from and change this year.”
