The Altoona boys’ basketball team saw its season come to a close Tuesday night in Barron, as they lost their first-round playoff game to the Golden Bears, 70-49. Barron (15-6) charged out of the gate to take leads of 7-0 and 15-4 in the early going, holding a 21-10 advantage after the opening quarter. The Railroaders (5-16) pulled back within 30-25 shortly before halftime, but the Bears got a three-pointer from Brad Hallberg to regain the momentum. Barron led 37-27 at halftime, and Altoona never cut the lead to less than 10 after that as the Bears built the margin to as many as 24.

The Altoona boys’ basketball team played what their coach called their most complete game of the season, but it was not quite enough to hand conference leader Eau Claire Regis their first loss in Western Cloverbelt play, as the Ramblers edged Altoona 56-51 on Thursday, January 31. The Railroaders (4-8 Western Cloverbelt Conference, 4-12 overall) kept pace with Regis (12-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference, 14-2 overall) throughout, leading by as many as five early in the second half and having an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute.
