The Altoona boys’ hockey team improved their record to 3-6-1 with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Barron/Chetek Bears on Thursday, January 8. The Railroaders were in control of the game from start to finish as they dominated the Bears offensively and defensively, out-shooting the Bears 40-13 and getting goals from seven different players.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team kept a pair of former Northwest Central Hockey League rivals from scoring for most of two games, but had to settle for an 0-1-1 record on the week, with a 1-1 tie at La Crescent on Saturday, January 3, and a 4-2 loss to Sparta on Tuesday, January 6.

Altoona’s Zach Vaughan, Nick Stirmel, and Derek Anderson defend the Railroaders’ goal during the first period of their game against Webster/Siren on Thursday, December 18.
The Altoona boys’ hockey team lost their third game in a row when they dropped a 3-1 decision to the Webster/Siren Blizzard on Thursday, December 18.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team hung with Eau Claire North for most of the game and out-shot the Huskies 38-22, but were unable to come out with a victory, allowing four third-period goals in a 5-2 loss at Altoona Hobbs Sports Center on Thursday, December 11.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team scored three goals in the third period – two of them shorthanded – to pull away from Baldwin-Woodville in an 8-3 Railroader win at Altoona Hobbs Sports Center on Tuesday, December 9.

The Altoona hockey team lost a tough game to the Amery Warriors on Thursday, December 4 in Altoona. This was a hard-fought 5-1 defeat for the Railroaders that drops Altoona’s record to 1-2 for the year.

The Altoona boys’ hockey team opened the 2008-2009 season with a 7-2 loss to the La Crosse Aquinas/Holmen/Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau Avalanche in Onalaska on Saturday, November 29. Special teams played a key role as the Avalanche scored two goals on power plays, two shorthanded goals, and two goals just after Altoona power plays ended.

The Eau Claire North/Eau Claire Memorial/Altoona co-op girls’ hockey team split its opening two games, defeating Superior 2-0 on the road on Saturday, November 29, and losing 4-1 to Chippewa Falls at home on Tuesday, December 2.

After going on a late-season run to finish at the .500 mark a year ago, the Altoona boys’ hockey team hopes to carry that momentum into the 2008-2009 campaign.
“I think we should have a pretty good team again,” said Steve Marczinke, who enters his 16th year as the Railroaders’ coach. “I like the way we’ve looked so far in practice. We’ve got a good group of juniors and a couple seniors; we have a lot of experience. Our goaltending looks like it’s going to be pretty solid this year… so I’m looking for big things.”
