For the second year in a row, the Altoona girls’ tennis team finished their season at the WIAA Team State Tournament in Madison.
The Railroaders also went undefeated in Chippewa Valley Tennis Conference play, just as they had done a year ago… and they did it after losing seven of their 10 players to graduation.

The Altoona girls’ tennis team got some strong individual performances but were unable to come out with a victory in the WIAA state semifinals, losing 7-0 to eventual state champion Green Bay Notre Dame at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Saturday, October 25.

Both flights of the Altoona girls’ tennis team that participated in WIAA Individual State came up short, but Railroader coach Greg Emerson said he looks for the experience to prove valuable when the team returns to Madison to face Green Bay Notre Dame at WIAA Team State.

Members of the Altoona girls’ tennis team will be making two trips to Madison’s Nielsen Stadium in the upcoming weeks, with singles player Hillary Jenness and the doubles tandem of Alana Peck and Lindsey Sletner participating in WIAA Individual State from Thursday, October 16 to Saturday, October 18, and the entire team returning for WIAA Team State on Saturday, October 25.
Jenness was scheduled to face Amanda Dick of Kenosha St. Joseph on Thursday, with the winner advancing to play at noon on Friday, October 17. A win in that match would guarantee her at least one Saturday match.
Peck and Sletner were slated to play Stefanie Eis and Nicole Schrimpf of Manitowoc Roncalli on Thursday, with the winner playing at 1:30 p.m. A win in that match would ensure at least one Saturday match.
The entire Railroader lineup will take the courts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, to face Green Bay Notre Dame in the Division 2 team semifinals.
The winner of that match will play the winner of Big Foot/Williams Bay and the University School of Milwaukee at 2:00 p.m.

The Altoona girls’ tennis team qualified for WIAA Team State for the second consecutive season, advancing six of their seven flights through subsectionals at La Crosse Aquinas on Monday, October 6, and clinching the state berth before any of the flight championships had been played at sectionals in Durand on Wednesday, October 8. The Railroaders scored 22 points in subsectional matches and added 18 more at sectionals for a total of 40, ahead of perennial power La Crosse Aquinas’ 33 points.

The Altoona girls’ tennis team claimed its fourth consecutive conference title by winning six of the seven flights at the Chippewa Valley Tennis Conference Tournament at Altoona and Eau Claire Regis on Saturday, September 27.

The Altoona girls’ tennis team won their own home tournament on Thursday, August 28, sweeping both Osceola and Rice Lake 7-0, and then defeating Holmen 5-2 to claim the title and improve their record to 9-2.

The Altoona girls’ tennis team played inthe Altoona Invitational on Saturday, August 23, where they took second place behind New Richmond. #1 singles player Hillary Jenness and the #1 doubles team of Lindsey Sletner and Ashley Schick won flight championships.
The Altoona girls’ tennis team won second-place honors in the Altoona Invitational held on Saturday, August 23 at North High School in Eau Claire. In addition to host Altoona, the eight-team competition included favorites New Richmond and East Troy.
