Riding a six-game winning streak since their 1-3 start, it appeared the Altoona girls’ basketball team was back on track. The one thing they had not done in that span was face a team with a winning record. They faced that test on Tuesday, January 13, and passed, extending their winning streak to seven games with a 50-46 win over rival Eau Claire Regis in a game that could prove crucial in the Western Cloverbelt Conference standings.

Monica Rasmussen and the Altoona girls’ basketball game defeated Gilman 68-28 on Thursday, December 18.
The Altoona girls’ basketball team rushed out to a 25-point halftime lead and then held Gilman without a basket for the first 12-plus minutes of the second half in a 68-28 runaway at Altoona on Thursday, December 18.

The Altoona girls’ basketball team made sure there would be no last-second shot this time.
After losing on buzzer-beating shots in each of their last two games, the Railroaders left nothing to chance against Thorp on Tuesday, December 9, essentially putting the game away by the opening minutes of the second half in a 58-33 blowout.

For the second time in three days, a last-second shot sent the Altoona girls’ basketball team to a heartbreaking defeat, as West De Pere’s Melissa Kazik hit a three with 0.8 seconds remaining to lift the Phantoms to a 43-42 win over the Railroaders on Saturday, December 6.

Osseo-Fairchild rallied from a 10-point deficit in the last 3:12, getting a game-winning jumper from Sarah Lundberg as time expired to defeat the Altoona girls’ basketball team 46-44 in Osseo on Thursday, December 4.

It may have been the first game of the season, but both the Altoona and Eau Claire Regis girls’ basketball teams appeared to be in midseason form as they squared off at Regis on Thursday, November 20. In a back-and-forth contest that saw 14 lead changes and last-second drama in every quarter, a pair of free throws with 9.4 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as Altoona fell to the Ramblers, 62-60.
“For the opening game, it was really good,” said Altoona coach Scott Harmon. “Did we make some crucial mistakes at crucial times? Yes, we did. The thing is, you hope the girls that did that learn from it.”

Falling behind by seven points in the game’s opening minutes did not seem to faze the Altoona girls’ basketball team, which rebounded to take an 11-9 lead after the first quarter and go on to defeat Fall Creek 49-35 in Altoona on Tuesday, November 25.

After making their first-ever trip to Madison for the WIAA State Tournament last season, the Altoona girls’ basketball team will be looking to build off that success this year.
Although the Railroaders lost three starters from last year’s 22-3 state semifinalist team, including Western Cloverbelt All-Conference players Tiffany Gregorich and Aimee Reyzer, they still return six upperclassmen that saw extensive playing time a season ago.
