Almost.
Depending on how you look at it, the Altoona girls’ basketball team was a couple points, a couple seconds, or a couple inches short of completing one of the greatest comebacks in WIAA State Tournament history and advancing to the state championship game. But instead, the 19-point deficit the Railroaders faced early in the third quarter proved a little too much to overcome, and Altoona fell to eventual champion Monroe 49-47 in the Division 2 state semifinals at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on Friday, March 14.

The Altoona girls’ basketball team moved within one victory of their first-ever state tournament appearance on Thursday, March 6, holding Amery without a field goal for a span of over 16 minutes as they defeated the Warriors 45-24 in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal game in River Falls.

The Altoona girls’ basketball team qualified for the WIAA State Tournament for the first time in team history with a 51-28 victory over previously unbeaten Neillsville on Saturday night at Johnson Fieldhouse in Menomonie.
Altoona (22-2) took a 9-2 lead after the first quarter and never trailed in the game, hitting nearly 50 percent from the field while Neillsville (24-1) connected on just 17 percent in the game. Brittany Gregorich led the Lady Rails with 15 points while Aimee Reyzer and Tiffany Gregorich added 11 and 10, respectively. Altoona will face Monroe in the state semifinals on Friday, March 14 at 3:15 p.m. at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Altoona advanced to Saturday’s sectional finals against Neillsville with a 45-24 victory over Amery in River Falls on Thursday night. The Railroaders (21-2) held Amery (18-6) without a field goal for a span of over 16 minutes from the early first quarter into the third. Tiffany Gregorich had 15 points to lead the Railroaders while Amery’s Taylor Luke scored 10. Look for the full game story in next week’s edition of the Altoona Star.

The Altoona girls’ basketball team’s regional final victory over Durand did more than just put the Railroaders into sectional play. The win also made head coach Scott Harmon the winningest coach in school history, improving his record to 122-36 since taking the job in 2001. Tom Hendricks previously held the school mark, having gone 121-118 with the Railroaders from 1985-1996.
