The Altoona golf team placed fourth in the Cloverbelt Conference this season, exceeding many expectations and setting the bar higher for next year’s squad.
“I was just really tickled with that,” said coach Cliff Kleinke. “I don’t think we were really expected to (finish that high).”
The Railroaders had five players finish in the top 25 in the 13-team conference, with Cody Gaede and Kory Evans both earning Cloverbelt Conference Honorable Mention. Michael Peterson, Zach Szydel, and Nathan Poquette also had top-25 finishes. Only Evans and Peterson graduate, however, so Kleinke is looking for further improvement next season.
“We had five players in the top 25, but we didn’t have any in the top 10,” said Kleinke. “The conference was very young… the best scores in the conference were underclassmen, so it’s going to be an interesting challenge for us. We’ll have to earn our place again.”
The 2008 season was not only Kleinke’s first year as the head coach, it was also the team’s first season playing at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club after previously leaving town to play “home” meets in Lake Hallie.
“We were really pleased with the opportunity we had over at Hillcrest, and it worked out really well for us,” said Kleinke. “Some of the other coaches have made the comment that it’s nice to be able to go to Altoona and play.”
As for the players themselves, Kleinke said he has been happy with their effort.
“We’ve got some kids that seem to really be enthused about the game,” said Kleinke. “Whether they can bring the scores down for next year is yet to be seen, but we’ll find that out next year.”
