Softball continued success this year

winningteamweb.jpg   The Altoona softball team had another successful season in 2008, finishing 19-4, tying for the Western Cloverbelt Conference title, and advancing to the WIAA Division 2 sectional finals. Only a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Rice Lake prevented the Railroaders from making their first trip to the state tournament since 2001, but coach Jim Turner said that did not overshadow the team’s accomplishments this season.

Softball season ends with sectional final loss

watthomerweb.jpg   There were 107 pitches thrown by the Altoona softball team in their sectional final loss at Rice Lake on Thursday, May 29. Yet it was a two-pitch span of worst-case scenarios in the third inning that made all the difference, as the Railroaders’ 3-1 lead quickly turned into a 5-3 deficit, and was unable to completely recover, falling to Rice Lake 5-4.

Rails use fourth inning to top Mosinee 7-1

   The Altoona softball team used a six-run fourth inning to blow open a close sectional semifinal game in Rice Lake on Thursday, May 29, defeating Mosinee 7-1 to advance to the sectional finals for the first time since the team’s state championship 2001 season.

Softball opens playoffs with 13-0 win

robbihill-cmykweb.jpg   It took until their second time through the order, but when the Altoona softball team’s offense caught fire, they made quick work of their first playoff opponent, defeating Sparta 13-0 in five innings at Cinder City Park on Tuesday, May 20.

Rails avenge earlier loss, defeat Thorp

   The first time the Altoona softball team faced Thorp this season, the results were not what they had hoped, but they took full advantage of the rematch on Thursday, May 15, rallying from a 4-0 deficit to beat the Cardinals 8-5.

Altoona splits with Regis
