Altoona junior Jon Gillespie jumped a school-record 44 feet, 2 inches in the triple jump, good for fourth place at the WIAA state track and field meet, held in La Crosse on Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31.

Several Altoona athletes advanced to the WIAA track sectionals with strong performances at the regional meet in Bloomer on Monday, May 19, as the Railroader boys finished sixth and the Altoona girls placed seventh at the competition.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Altoona High School 4-by-200-meter relay school record has been broken.

After one glance through Altoona High School’s track and field record book, it is apparent that few records last for 30 years without being broken. So when the 4-by-200-meter relay team of Matt Fetzer, Shawn Blake, Jon Gillespie, and Dakota Thompson eclipsed the 1978 team’s longstanding mark at their meet in Arcadia on Friday, April 25, it was an occasion to remember.

The Altoona boys’ and girls’ track teams both placed fifth at their meet in Fall Creek on Tuesday, April 29. On the boys’ side, Dakota Thompson and Matt Fetzer came in first and second in the 300-meter hurdles, respectively, while their 4-by-200-meter relay team with Ryan Pfundheller and Jon Gillespie also placed first.
