Team wins championship

   On Saturday, December 6, the Street Smart Soccer Stars took on other 10- to 11-year-old girls and boys in the Turkey Bowl, an soccer tournament held at Eau Claire’s Indoor Sports Center. Team members include Emily James, Elizabeth Shinners, Alexis Schaffer, and Markeysha Hazelton; they are coached by Altoona resident and police officer Jesse James.
   The girls played three games, first winning 8-5 and then winning 5-3. They then won the championship game 4-3 on a game-winning goal with 2:32 left.
   “It was an awesome sight,” said Jesse. “I have known these girls for over three years now and to see the way their skills each year keep improving and how they can keep up with the boys is very fun to watch.”

Letters from our Leaders: September brings schools a fresh start

   In my role as Altoona School District Superintendent, I always look forward to a new school year. This year when I addressed the entire staff, I challenged them and myself to hold on to the optimism and positive attitudes that September brings – for the whole year. Now as we roll into October, I extend that same challenge to parents and students.

Fire + EMS: 16 incidents from Sept. 15 to Sept. 20

Basketball teams each place third

   Altoona summer basketball teams fared well in recent tournament play, with both boys’ and girls’ high school-level teams finishing third in highly competitive events recently.
   The Altoona boys’ team placed third in a 22-team tournament held in La Crosse from June 13-15, winning six of eight games against a field that included teams from as far away as Illinois.
   Meanwhile, the Altoona girls’ team finished third in the high school division of the AAU Shootout held in Menomonie from June 27-29, going 4-1 on the weekend. They defeated Chippewa Falls, Chetek, Elk Mound, and Hurley, but lost to Wausau Newman.

Solie falls at state tourney

   Altoona senior Fabricio Solis participated in the WIAA state tennis tournament in Madison on Thursday, May 29, but lost in a tiebreaker in his first match, falling to Jimmy Leschke of Oshkosh Lourdes, 3-6, 6-2 (10-7).

Youth football Camp 2008

blockingweb.jpgAltoona High School hosted its fifth annual Youth Football Camp on Saturday, May 17. Forty-eight students registered and were taught by AHS alumni that included Storm Harmon, Michael Tackmann, and Jacob Bernardy.

Boys’ tennis team tops Durand 6-1

Rails cruise past Tigers for 6-1 win

   The Altoona boys’ tennis team won all but two games in four singles matches and also got a forfeit victory at #3 doubles en route to a 6-1 win over Black River Falls on Friday, May 9.
